Sports Medicine/Questions Answered by Expert Dr George

Sports Medicine/To tape or not to tape

Question
Good morning,

I am a 29 year old woman who has in the last 6 months started a roller derby league.  This involves 3 hour practice on quad skates at least twice per week.

Last week I minorly sprained my left ankle (weight bearing, slight swelling).  I used the RICE method and the swelling was down within 3 days.  I know my ankle is weak and I have started some ankle strengthning exercises.

My question is: Should I or should I not tape my ankle for practice?  I have two coaches recommending to tape as it will support the ankle and prevent further injury.  Another coach believes the ankle will not strengthen correctly if you tape and thinks I shouldn't tape it.

Which do you agree with?

Thank you very much for your time!

Answer
This Chicago Podiatrist, Elmhurst Podiatrist & West Loop Podiatrist says.......

Dear Crystal,

Regarding your ankle sprain. Continue to protect it (tape it). Also let it heal first before you start your strengthening exercises. Wait about 3-4 weeks from date of injury, and make sure it is pain free.
If there is pain-have it looked by a Board Certified Podiatrist. Trying to strengthen an injured area too soon will lead to more injuries. Body needs time to heal.

Hope This Helps
