Strong, flexible foot arches play an important role in balance, comfort, and long-term mobility. Gentle daily stretching can help reduce tension and improve circulation in the muscles that support the arch. The towel stretch is an easy option that lengthens the plantar fascia and calf by gently pulling the foot toward the body while seated. Another effective technique is the ball roll, which massages the arch and helps release tight tissue by slowly rolling the sole of the foot over a small ball. While these stretches can be helpful, persistent pain or stiffness may signal an underlying issue. A podiatrist can evaluate foot mechanics, identify contributing conditions, and create a personalized treatment plan that may include custom orthotics or advanced care. If you have pain in the arch of your foot, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer effective relief tips, which may include additional arch stretches.

Why Stretching Is Important for Your Feet

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with one of our podiatrists from Ankle N Foot. our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.

Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.

Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.

Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

Symptoms include sudden, intense pain, swelling, redness, warmth, and stiffness, often disrupting daily activity and mobility. Risk factors include genetics, obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, high-purine diets, and certain medical conditions such as kidney disease or high blood pressure. Causes involve an imbalance between uric acid production and elimination, leading to crystal formation in the joints. If left untreated, gout can result in chronic pain and joint damage. A podiatrist can evaluate symptoms, confirm the diagnosis, and develop a personalized treatment plan including medication guidance, lifestyle recommendations, and foot care strategies. If you have pain in your big toe, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can provide a diagnosis and treatment.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle N Foot. our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Quality materials and strong construction provide durability, while proper arch support and cushioning help maintain alignment and absorb impact throughout the day. Slip resistant soles add safety in fast paced clinical environments, and stable designs help prevent strain in the ankles, knees, and lower back. A podiatrist can assess your foot structure and recommend the best shoe features to keep you comfortable and protected during demanding shifts. If foot pain or fatigue is affecting your work, it is suggested that you promptly consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions, and guide you on the correct shoes to wear.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle N Foot. our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Stress fractures are small cracks in a bone that form when repeated pressure outweighs the body’s ability to recover. These injuries often appear in people who increase activity too quickly, spend long hours on hard surfaces, or wear footwear that does not provide enough support. Early signs include a pinpoint ache that becomes sharper during walking or running, and eases with rest. Swelling or mild bruising may develop, and the discomfort usually returns the moment activity resumes. Although the fracture is small, leaving it untreated can lead to a complete break or long-lasting pain. Reducing impact, resting the foot, and adjusting footwear are important first steps toward healing. If you notice persistent pain in one spot on the foot or discomfort that worsens with activity, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists from Ankle N Foot. our doctors can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use. The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

Runners

People affected with Osteoporosis

Tennis or basketball players

Gymnasts

High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

Sever’s disease is a common source of heel discomfort in growing children, especially those who are active in sports. The condition develops when the growth plate at the back of the heel becomes irritated by repeated impact or tight calf muscles. A child may complain of soreness during running or jumping, and the pain often improves with rest, but returns quickly once activity resumes. Swelling or tenderness at the back of the heel can appear, and some children begin to walk on their toes to avoid pressure. Although the name sounds serious, the condition improves with proper guidance and activity adjustments. Wearing supportive footwear and gentle stretching can also help ease symptoms. If your child has recurring heel pain or limps after activity, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and care plan.

Sever’s disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Ankle N Foot. our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Poor circulation in the feet can cause coldness, numbness, swelling, and fatigue that make daily movement uncomfortable. Improving blood flow begins with simple habits that encourage the vessels to work more efficiently. Regular movement helps tremendously, even gentle activities like walking, ankle rotations, or stretching throughout the day. These actions activate the muscles that naturally push blood back toward the heart. Warm water foot soaks can also provide temporary comfort by relaxing tight tissues. Wearing shoes that fit well, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing, and elevating your feet while resting can further support healthier flow. People who smoke, have diabetes, or live with vascular concerns may notice circulation improves when these underlying issues are better managed. Compression socks can be useful for some individuals, but they are not right for everyone. If you experience persistent coldness, color changes, or slow-healing wounds on your feet, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for an evaluation and tailored care.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact one of our podiatrists of Ankle N Foot. our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

Numbness

Tingling

Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs

Pain

Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Foot cramps are sudden, involuntary contractions of the muscles in the foot that can cause sharp pain and discomfort. They often occur due to wearing tight or poorly fitting shoes, dehydration, overexertion during physical activity, or low levels of essential minerals such as potassium, calcium, or magnesium. Symptoms include a sudden tightening or knotting of the foot muscles, stiffness, and difficulty moving the affected area. Frequent cramps may indicate underlying issues with circulation, nerve function, or muscle balance. A podiatrist can evaluate the cause of foot cramps, recommend stretching and strengthening exercises, suggest proper footwear, and provide guidance on nutrition and hydration to reduce occurrences. If you have developed foot cramps, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to relieve pain and maintain healthy, comfortable feet.

Foot Pain

Foot pain can be extremely painful and debilitating. If you have a foot pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Ankle N Foot. our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Causes

Foot pain is a very broad condition that could be caused by one or more ailments. The most common include:

Bunions

Hammertoes

Plantar Fasciitis

Bone Spurs

Corns

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Ingrown Toenails

Arthritis (such as Gout, Rheumatoid, and Osteoarthritis)

Flat Feet

Injury (from stress fractures, broken toe, foot, ankle, Achilles tendon ruptures, and sprains)

And more

Diagnosis

To figure out the cause of foot pain, podiatrists utilize several different methods. This can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to X-rays and MRI scans. Prior medical history, family medical history, and any recent physical traumatic events will all be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment depends upon the cause of the foot pain. Whether it is resting, staying off the foot, or having surgery; podiatrists have a number of treatment options available for foot pain.

Tarsal coalition occurs when two or more bones in a child’s foot grow together, which limits normal motion. This can cause stiffness, pain along the side or back of the foot, frequent ankle sprains, flat arches, and cramps or muscle spasms after activity. Although it is often congenital, many children begin to feel symptoms of tarsal coalition around ages eight to 15, when their bones harden and the fused area becomes less flexible. Some children may limp or have trouble walking on uneven ground because the affected foot does not move properly. Treatment depends on the severity of the condition and can involve supportive inserts, casting to rest the foot, or surgery to separate the bones and restore movement. If your child has symptoms of tarsal coalition, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and treatment options.

Congenital foot problems require immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Ankle N Foot. our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Congenital foot problems are deformities affecting the feet, toes, and/or ankles that children are born with. Some of these conditions have a genetic cause while others just happen. Some specific foot ailments that children may be born with include clubfeet, polydactyly/macrodactyly, and cleft foot. There are several other foot anomalies that can occur congenitally. What all of these conditions have in common is that a child may experience difficulty walking or performing everyday activities, as well as trouble finding footwear that fits their foot deformity. Some of these conditions are more serious than others. Consulting with a podiatrist as early as possible will help in properly diagnosing a child’s foot condition while getting the necessary treatment underway.

What are Causes of Congenital Foot Problem?

A congenital foot problem is one that happens to a child at birth. These conditions can be caused by a genetic predisposition, developmental or positional abnormalities during gestation, or with no known cause.

What are Symptoms of Congenital Foot Problems?

Symptoms vary by the congenital condition. Symptoms may consist of the following:

Clubfoot, where tendons are shortened, bones are shaped differently, and the Achilles tendon is tight, causing the foot to point in and down. It is also possible for the soles of the feet to face each other.

Polydactyly, which usually consists of a nubbin or small lump of tissue without a bone, a toe that is partially formed but has no joints, or an extra toe.

Vertical talus, where the talus bone forms in the wrong position causing other bones in the foot to line up improperly, the front of the foot to point up, and the bottom of the foot to stiffen, with no arch, and to curve out.

Tarsal coalition, when there is an abnormal connection of two or more bones in the foot leading to severe, rigid flatfoot.

Cleft foot, where there are missing toes, a V-shaped cleft, and other anatomical differences.

Macrodactyly, when the toes are abnormally large due to overgrowth of the underlying bone or soft tissue.

Treatment and Prevention

While there is nothing one can do to prevent congenital foot problems, raising awareness and receiving neonatal screenings are important. Early detection by taking your child to a podiatrist leads to the best outcome possible.
